What do interpreters do?
Freelance interpreters, or translators as some may call them, are professionals who speak two or more languages and who translate verbal and written communications from one language into another. They also include those who interpret sign language. The kinds of work that you might take on as an interpreter can be varied. From online document translation, to conversations, speeches, business and legal documents and more. Interpreter clients can range from individuals who need help on a project, to business, government bodies or even lawyers working on a case.
Do interpreters need insurance?
In short, yes, interpreters do need insurance. As a professional freelance interpreter you may make mistakes in your translation that somehow damages a client or organisation which may lead to them pursuing you for compensation for said damages. As a freelance interpreter you are liable for your work and the implications that work may bring. Legal translations for example are a particularly high risk activity, and any mistakes could have long tailed repercussions. As an interpreter it is important you get professional indemnity insurance, which covers you against such professional negligence and any claims made against you. You may also want to consider Public Liability cover, which will protect you in case anyone is injured, or their property damaged as a result of your business and its activities. If you are regularly visiting clients offices, on the road or meeting clients on location it will be sensible to get this cover too. At Dinghy we can provide you with the cover you need, with our low cost, flexible insurance cover. Get a quote now!
